Meta's Muse Spark Open: an open-weight AI model

The full reading behind my Short: what open-weight means, and what Meta is claiming.

The short version

On 15 October 2026, Meta launched Muse Spark Open, an open-weight AI model [1]. Meta's chief of AI, Alexandr Wang, called it "the most capable US open-weight model to date" [1]. Meta says it rivals, and in some cases outperforms, similar models from leading Chinese developers [1].

Open-weightdevelopers can download and modify the weights [1]
2Mac Studios with M5 Ultra chips can run it, Meta says [1]

What open-weight means

With closed models such as ChatGPT or Claude, you cannot download the model itself. With an open-weight model, developers can download the parameters (weights and biases) and modify them [1].

Meta says the model is built for coding and agentic work, and excels at long-horizon tasks, complex software engineering and multi-step reasoning, with strong safeguards built in [1].

About this page

The Short uses real, illustrative photos from Wikimedia Commons (credited below); they are not photos of the study itself. Performance statements are Meta's claims as reported by AFP/The Guardian. This page is general tech news.

Why it matters

  • Competition. Chinese developers such as Alibaba (Qwen), Moonshot AI (Kimi K3) and Z.ai (GLM) have led open-weight models [1].
  • Hardware. It needs significant computing power; Meta says two Mac Studios with M5 Ultra chips can act as a desktop "supercomputer" [1].
  • Claims to check. Independent testing will show how it compares.

Full narration (transcript)

Meta just released an AI model you could run on your own desk. It's called Muse Spark Open, and it launched on October 15th. It's open weight, which means developers can download the model's parameters and modify them. Closed models, like ChatGPT or Claude, don't let you do that. Chinese developers have led the open weight field, with models like Alibaba's Qwen and Moonshot's Kimi. Meta's AI chief, Alexandr Wang, called it the most capable US open weight model to date. Meta says it rivals, and in some cases beats, similar models from leading Chinese developers. It's built for coding and agentic work, like long, multi step tasks. Meta says it also has strong safeguards built in. But it needs serious computing power. Meta says you can run it on two Mac Studios with M5 Ultra chips, like a desktop supercomputer. Those are Meta's own claims, so independent testing will matter. The launch came just days after Meta announced a new closed model.
