The full story behind my Short: Iowa farmers planting fall cover crops can get $5/acre off 2027 crop insurance — record 1.4 million acres in cost-share, announced 15-16 October 2026.
This is a soil series follow-up to my California no-till and Maryland soil sponge Shorts: now the incentive. Iowa farmers who plant eligible fall cover crops can receive a $5 per acre discount on their 2027 crop insurance premiums, with no cap on eligible acres as sourced [1][2]. Plant this fall, then enrol when the online window opens 1 December 2026 and closes 22 January 2027 [1]. Secretary Naig said farmers have already enrolled nearly 1.4 million acres in the state cover-crop cost-share programme — more than double the previous statewide record — including more than 340,000 acres in the Greater Des Moines Watershed, more than triple last year [1]. Honest caveats: this is an Iowa, United States programme only and is not available in the UK; the $5/acre and acreage figures are as sourced from Iowa officials; cover-crop acres enrolled in other Iowa or USDA NRCS cost-share programmes are not eligible for this discount; some policies, including Whole-Farm Revenue Protection or those under written agreements, may be excluded; and farmers must follow their policy’s good farming practices and check with their crop insurance agent [1][2].
The Crop Insurance Discount Program is jointly administered by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the USDA Risk Management Agency, and has run for a decade [1]. Cover crops help prevent erosion and improve water quality and soil health [2]. The premium reduction is for fall-planted cover crops with a spring-planted cash crop [2].

Cover your soil, and Iowa cuts five dollars an acre off crop insurance. Soil series follow-up: paid to keep fields green after harvest. Iowa's discount programme is back, announced October fifteenth. Plant fall cover crops now, then enrol from December first. Five dollars per acre off twenty twenty-seven premiums, no cap on acres. Record interest: nearly one point four million acres in cost-share. More than double the previous statewide record. Greater Des Moines alone passed three hundred forty thousand acres, triple last year. Why pay? Roots hold soil, cut erosion and protect water. Living cover feeds soil life through bare winter months. Caveat: acres already in cost-share are not eligible here. Some policies are excluded, like Whole-Farm Revenue Protection. Follow your policy rules, and check with your agent. Sign-up: December first to January twenty-second, Clean Water Iowa. Iowa, United States only, not a UK scheme. Still, farmers will cover soil when the maths helps.
